My Story

I'm Melissa and I became a vegetarian at 15 after working at a burger restaurant. (Yep, that one.) As I got older, I gained some food intolerances too. That meant I had to say goodbye to gluten, dairy, and soy

  • After that, finding recipes that fit my needs was difficult.

  • I got stuck in a rut, eating the same few meals on repeat.

  • I spent more time cooking from scratch whether I had the time, energy or not.

Things became challenging.

Food can impact our physical and mental well-being and overall happiness. We can enjoy food, and nourish ourselves, and sharing around a table helps us connect to loved ones.

However, if you have food intolerances and/or preferences, this might not be natural.

I’ve found myself only being able to order chips from a friend's favourite restaurant and batted away concern by saying ‘Oh I had a big lunch’.

Or getting a lovely dinner party invitation and navigating that awkward conversation when you give them your list and, after a pause, you offer to bring your own food.

I felt disconnected and embarrassed. Oh, and I really missed cheese.

From that place, it was a big ask to find food I could not only eat, but also enjoy. Something had to change.

How I Turned It Around

So, I got creative in the kitchen, focusing on all the ingredients I could eat. I developed delicious recipes to fit my needs and nifty shortcuts to make preparing meals even easier.

I also hosted more to make it easier for my friends. And something magical happened too: we could now eat, share, and enjoy the same food. I felt more connected and relaxed and my friends loved the food, not missing anything.

It’s their fault why we’re here today :-). They wanted me to write down the recipes so they could have them, and they strongly urged me to share them to see if they could help others like me too.

I’m also a judge for the Free From Awards in the UK. What makes the awards so fantastic is they celebrate the very best in free from food & drink. They are also recognised for supporting, promoting and actively encouraging both existing and new product development.
